Try it Tuesdays

Not only do we play in the kitchen to make food to learn about other cultures, we also try new food each Tuesday. We started the year expanding their taste buds with variety; papaya, dragonfruit, smoked salmon, goat cheeses, and many more. Now we are adding a layer of drawing our food. They are making observations of shapes, light and dark, shadow and value study and these artists are amazing! It’s encouraging to see when all the connections come together and their skills shine. They have ramped up their writing skills from tastings and ranking the food to now they are writing descriptions about their food along with the drawings

Anubis the Egyptians God of the underworld

Our students made these dimensional portraits of Anubis. Each layer sits on top of a small piece of foam creating an element of depth. They mounted and framed these portraits on a repeated block print carving which mimicked hieroglyphs. One students sense of humor by writing the word yes over and over turned out when it printed in reverse looked eerily like the Rosetta Stone.

RE Sources

We also reached out into our community and helped RE Sources write post cards for giving Tuesday for donations to help them bring the vision of a vibrant, resilient Northwest Washington to life.
